My CAREER in FOCUS at County Media
2011: a year of new beginnings. At least for me it is. It also is the year of the rabbit. For some of you who don’t know what that means, it is the chinese zodiac. It goes by years rather then months and my year 1987 is also the year of the rabbit. Some say that when it’s your “year” it means good luck for you. I am really starting to believe that. My year started off with a big bang!
This week, I started my new job at County Media. This opportunity wouldn’t be available to me without the Career Focus grant, which came from the Ontario Association of Community Futures Development Corporations.
So far I’m starting to really learn a lot and it’s going great. My posts on this blog every week for the next three months will be about what I am learning, projects in focus, people I’ve networked with and my experiences in general.
For starters, who knew there were so many tools and different socializing sites? I thought I was educated really well in the social media world but I’m starting to learn that that wasn’t the case. I recently acquired knowledge about sites like wordpress.com, Digg.com, PostRank.com (which is an amazing tool once you figure out how to use it), Hootsuite.com, Gravatar.com and even sites like socialoomph.com.
Not only am I just discovering most of these sites but I’m also learning about Google and what they do other then just a search engine. Sometimes I make myself laugh because I was just so oblivious to the knowledge and information that Google has. I started by learning about Google Alerts and Google Analytics then Google AdWords and Google AdSense. It’s all so overwhelming to me. But I think I’m doing good so far.
I can’t wait for things to really take off. It’ll be a real test of the skills I learned at Loyalist College. I couldn’t be happier or more excited!
Caitlin Wilkins was hired as a coordinator of online communities by County Media under the Career Focus programme managed by the OACFDC. Tune in for Caitlin’s weekly blog posts to follow her journey toward becoming a social media expert.

Exciting stuff … look forward to learning a little bit more every week from your posts. Have fun on your road to discovery.
