All-candidates debate a success

Submitted by Jennifer on June 21, 2010 – 7:24 amNo Comment

The following guest blog post first appeared on http://Mertens4Mayor.com on June 21, 2010. I recorded the video during the event, did some basic edits, and uploaded them to Merten’s campaign YouTube channel before posting them with this write-up to his Web site.

Many people have been discussing online and in person the irony of the name for last Thursday’s political event at PECI. The high school in Picton was the site of a debate by Prince Edward County mayoral candidates organized by the Concerned Citizens group. The organizers called it an all-candidates debate and truly, had all invitees attended, it would have been an accurate title. Given that Sandy Latchford opted out of the opportunity, it was in fact a misnomer.

As Ms Latchford indicated in her public refusal of the event invitation, there is still time for other candidates to register. Once the window for nominations closes in September, other all-candidates events will surely be arranged by various groups.

In response to queries from the public, Peter openly stated his reasons for participating here on this Web site.

For want of a better title to denote the occasion last Thursday, almost everyone is calling it an all-candidates debate; and it was the first of the electoral season. Those present were, in no particular order: Peter Mertens, Lori Slik, Monica Alyea and Gordon Fox. All those present seemed to enjoy getting their feet wet in a public forum.
