Social Media Week in a small town
Today marks the beginning of Social Media Week, which is being celebrated at cities in several countries, including England, the United States, Germany and Canada. In honour of this second annual event – happening officially just in large urban centres – I’m going to blog each day this week on issues of social media as they pertain to small town life. I’ll call it Social Media Week: Prince Edward County.
Tomorrow (MON) I’ll start it all off by watching the live media launch of the week’s festivities online at SocialMediaWeek.org. The video will show a live feed from New York City, at a launch that will welcome live feeds from social media experts in four different countries into the conference room itself on a big screen. Like reading a book about reading a book or looking into a mirror with a reflection of your reflection. Only simpler.
Then I’ll proceed to a focus group with teens and young adults, hosted by Scout Design at their offices in Picton. We’ll discuss with the group their online habits, including their use of social media. I’ll blog about that, too. I’ll also be watching the progression of a local criminal case: the disappearance of Jessica Elizabeth Lloyd, and how her community is rallying behind her using the power of social media. Lots more will come my way, and I’ll be covering it each day.
For those of you who want to participate in some small way, the Social Media Week creators are using the hashtag #smw in their online writing, and you can do the same.
If you don’t know what the heck I’m talking about in this blog post or anytime, try becoming enlightened at one of my social media seminars, starting next week in cities between Kingston and Toronto.
