Rick Mercer: the highlight of my day

Submitted by Jennifer on January 11, 2010 – 10:52 amNo Comment
Rick Mercer does the Bay of Quinte

Canadian celebrity tweets that he had an “epic day” on the Bay of Quinte

There were many good stories today at the radio station, but my favourite is the one about Rick Mercer.

Not that I met him. But reading about his “epic day” on Twitter made me FEEL like we were together. The tweet stated, Today i went ice sailing and had my ass kicked by an 82 year old man named Red. Epic day.”

His production crew apparently snuck in from Toronto last Sunday, very hush-hush, to shoot this segment of the Rick Mercer report. It’ll air tomorrow (TUES) on CBC television at 8pm.

The Belleville Intelligencer got wind (pun!) of the ice-sailing experience, and published a story about it. I noticed the photo was borrowed from the Rick Mercer Web site, the same photo you see in this blog post, so I got the feeling they hadn’t been with Mr. Mercer that day, either. (To think I could maybe have seen him from the newsroom window that morning, if I’d only had binoculars!)

I thought I could write an even better story for the radio by interviewing the guy who privileged Mr. Mercer with his ice-sailing tour. But after several phone calls around Quinte, I couldn’t find the Red MacGillivray cited in the newspaper article. Please let me know if you who he is!

January 13 update: Sean and Orlena of the Mix Morning Crew found Red and interviewed him this morning live on air. What a hoot!
