Holidays in the newsroom not always quiet
…Not a creature was stirring; not even a mouse.
- C.C. Moore
It goes to show you never can tell what your day’s going to be like in the newsroom.
First, there was the shut-down of a local roadway which doubles as a provincial highway – in the middle of the afternoon shopping frenzy on Boxing Day.
Then there was uncertainty about the date and time of the rescheduled repatriation of our latest fallen Canadian soldier at CFB Trenton.
That was all, until I heard some activity on the scanner.
Some minor accidents in relation to the icy, foggy road conditions had occurred.
A house fire had kept crews busy overnight near Bancroft.
Another fire had started in a chimney in Marmora.
By the end of my shift, I’d written more original stories than on a non-holiday.
And to top it all off, I had a reunion more than two years in the making: my former co-host on Cool 100, Aaron Tompkins, showed up near noon to fill in for Zack Werner on Rock 107.
‘Twas two nights after Christmas and all through the station the keyboards were clicking with the news of a nation…
