The federal government accepted responsibility for cleaning up the waste in Port Hope as far back as 1988.  Since then, it has given Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, a federal Crown Corporation, the responsibility for cleaning up the waste and an agreement was signed to this effect back in 2001.</description>
