Family Day not a holiday for everyone

Submitted by Jennifer on February 16, 2009 – 8:08 pmNo Comment

I’d only been working for an hour this morning when I noticed the only other people contacting me were other writers.

Writers and other self-employed folks didn’t get a paid day off, but many workers did – and good on ya. When Premier Dalton McGuinty introduced the province’s ninth statutory holiday last year, I was ecstatic. Not because I’d be able to enjoy it like employed people, but because anyone living in the Ontario climate deserves a paid day off in the tiresome month of February!

Last Family Day weekend, my sister and I took a road trip to celebrate Carnival in Quebec City and on the Friday night of the new long weekend, we were still lining up at gas pumps and rest stations at midnight. Ontarians were itching to get outta town if they had to drive all night!

When I was in the newsroom yesterday, I came across a story that reminded me not everyone gets the stat off. Not all provinces have added a February holiday and federal workers were still expected to clock in. And then you got all those self-righteous writers. But generally, it seems Ontarians are happy with Family Day.

If you were one of the lucky ones, I hope your Family Day 2009 was Feb-ulous… and I aspire to join you next year!
